The lively committee putting the Smithfield’s exciting annual Platteland Preview together, has tied up most of the acts to be performed in June ahead of the Grahamstown Festival. It is also hard at finalising all the peripheral details to ensure that this major project is even more successful than in the past few years.
Preceding the show will be a cocktail party at the Red Barn celebrating the opening of another in the famously successful annual event.
Born to Diva
Opening proceedings at the Red Barn will be the widely acclaimed Tonya Koenderman, hailed by critics as “one of the hottest properties on the cabaret circuit” and “a pint-sized dynamo” in Born to Diva. She has an enviable record of success throughout her years in the business and continues to wow audiences both locally and abroad.
Tonya started her career fresh out of drama school with Kevin Feather’s cabaret, The DoohWah Girls which ran on and off for four years. She performed in the look-alike, sound-alike show Stars in Your Eyes, impersonating her favourite artist, Liza Minnelli, which ran for two seasons at the Carousel and has worked extensively for Sun International in a number of extravaganzas. She has the distinction of being the only local artist to star in the Sun City sensation Beyond Belief which ran for 16 months and in which she again impersonated Liza Minnelli.
Line Fourie is Terug
Ag My Moeder “Line Fourie is terug met ‘n nuwe eenvrouvertoning.”
Lust is a performance which will be played at the high school and is set to create awareness about AIDS. The message is conveyed with live music in a-cappella style and broadly is about choices made in life about who we want to become and be remembered.
Among other shows signed up for the 2016 season are: Creature (also at the Red Barn) , which is a piece of experimental theatre set on the streets of Johannesburg and carrying an age restriction; and Brent – A Mobile Thriller also has an age restriction for its language, violence and prejudice. This is the first appearance in the Free State of the Mobile Thriller series.
