Private Marmaduke Atkinson of the 1^st Victorian Mounted Rifles, was from the town of Sale in the Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia.

He died in Smithfield on the 27th of June 1900 of enteric fever.

After his death, several letters to his mother were published in the Gippsland Times, in which he was complimented on his conduct during the war.
